Serpentinized peridotite versus thick mafic crust at the Romanche oceanic transform fault

چکیده
Abstract The crust beneath transform faults at slow-spreading ridges has been considered to be thin, comprising a thin mafic layer overlying serpentinized peridotite. Using wide-angle seismic data, we report the presence of Moho ?6 km depth and low-velocity anomaly extending down 9 20-km-wide Romanche valley floor in equatorial Atlantic Ocean. low crustal velocities above could due either highly mantle peridotite or fractured rocks. existence clear reflections occurrence large crustal-depth rupture during 2016 magnitude 7.1 earthquake suggest that likely consists material. Furthermore, below advocates for extensive serpentinization mantle, indicating reflection is unlikely produced by front. north fault material, but south appears more amagmatic, possibly containing Our results imply structure complex heterogeneous, thus would have significant influence on alteration processes.

The mafic rocks along the North Tabriz Fault, possible remnants of Neo-Tethys oceanic crust in NW Iran
The North Tabriz Fault is seismologically an active fault with current right lateral strike-slip movements. Restricted mafic to intermediate Late Cretaceous igneous rocks are exposed along the North Tabriz Fault. Whole rock samples and clinopyroxene phenocrysts geochemistry were studied in order to characterize the petrogenesis of these mafic rocks and their possible relation to an oceanic crus...
متن کاملPermeability within Basaltic Oceanic Crust
Water-rock interactions within the seafloor are responsible for significant energy and solute fluxes between basaltic oceanic crust and the overlying ocean. Permeability is the primary hydrologic property controlling the form, intensity, and duration of seafloor fluid circulation, but after several decades of characterizing shallow oceanic basement, we are still learning how permeability is cre...
متن کاملCoexisting serpentine and quartz from carbonate-bearing serpentinized peridotite in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman
Tectonically exposed mantle peridotite in the Oman Ophiolite is variably serpentinized and carbonated. Networks of young carbonate veins are prevalent in highly serpentinized peridotite, particularly near low-temperature alkaline springs emanating from the peridotite. An unusual feature in some samples is the coexistence of serpentine and quartz, which is not commonly observed in serpentinites....
متن کاملGeochemical heterogeneity and element mobility in deeply subducted oceanic crust; insights from high-pressure mafic rocks from New Caledonia
Bulk-rock major and trace element geochemistry of a range of eclogite, garnet blueschist and garnet amphibolite rocks from northern New Caledonia has been determined in order to geochemically characterise subducted oceanic crust. The rocks experienced peak metamorphic conditions of 1.9 GPa and 600 jC and represent excellent samples of oceanic crust that was subducted to depths of approximately ...
متن کاملComment on "Neodymium-142 evidence for Hadean mafic crust".
O'Neil et al. (Reports, 26 September 2008, p. 1828) presented neodymium-142 data for rocks from northern Quebec, Canada, and suggested that these rocks may represent the oldest preserved crustal section on Earth. We argue that the age of the rocks is based on a spurious correlation between rocks that are probably not co-genetic and negative (142)Nd anomalies that may be the result of an analyti...
